DNA: Howard Line Connections

When you combine my autosomal DNA matches at 23&Me and FTDNA and throw in my mother’s FTDNA results, I have over 1600 cousins to identify. Of the ones that I’ve figured out to date, six belong to Mom’s Howard line.

Nothing much is known about Thomas Howard. I’m not even completely sure he was the father of my 3rd great-grandfather, John Howard, but Frances Yeager Dunham makes the case that he was in her book Howards in Southeastern Kentucky.

According to Dunham, several of Thomas Howard’s children came to southeastern Kentucky in the very early 1800s (maybe from Georgia by way of Russell County, Virginia) with Thomas’ brother, James. She identifies Thomas, James, John, Benjamin, Julida, Elizabeth, William and Celia Howard as the children of Thomas Howard and includes Moses as a possibility with the notation that he may be the son of the younger Thomas.

John Covey Howard, son of John & Mary
If my autosomal DNA results are any indication, John, James and Benjamin were brothers (or at least close relatives). I match a descendant of Benjamin and one of James at 23&Me. My mother and I both match another of Benjamin’s descendants at FTDNA.

Dunham’s book is also my main source for the children of Thomas’ son, John Howard, and his wife, Mary Risner — Larkin, Elizabeth, John Covey (my 2nd great-grandfather), Michael, William R. Mary, Sarah, Catherine, Phoebe and Robert.

DNA results are solidifying some of those relationships, too. Mom and I match a descendant of Larkin and Mom matches two descendants of William R. We have several other matches showing Howard as a surname and I expect some of those will turn out to belong in this line as well.

Following Uncle Jimmy Through Voter Registration Records

When I came across California Voter Registration Records on Ancestry.com a few months ago, I immediately searched for my grandmother's brother, James Bailey Hankins, but I didn't expect to learn so much.

Uncle Jimmy lived at 11 different addresses from 1924 to 1954 and he wasn't especially loyal to either major political party. I knew he was an electrician but was surprised to find a couple of other occupations mentioned. It appears that Jimmy and his wife, Rachel, were separated in 1934. I can now identify the address where they were living when my father visited them in 1946 and have a date range for when a few other family photos were taken at that same house.

1924, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #474
James B Hankins, elctren, 112 S Olive St, D

1926, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #718
James B. Hankins, 112 S Olive St, pipe fttr, D

1928-1930, San Bernardino County, Morongo Precinct
James B Hankins, Electrician, Warrens Wells, Whitewater, Democrat
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, Bookkeeper, Warrens Wells, Whitewater, Republican
[Jimmy and Rachel were married in 1927 so this is the first registration where she is living with him.]

1930, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #815
James B Hankins, 748 N Dillon St, electren, R
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 748 N Dillon St, hswf, R

1932, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #678
James B Hankins, 1168 Bellevue Av, R
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 1168, Bellevue Av, DS [Declines to state]

1934, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #678
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 1168 Bellevue Ave, DS [Declines to state]

1934, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #814
James B Hankins, 318 1/4 N New Hampshire, R
[It looks like Jimmy and Rachel were separated in 1934. She's still living at their 1932 address but he isn't. There were a couple other James Hankinses in Los Angeles County during these years but they had different middle initials so this is almost certainly Jimmy.]

1936, Twenty-Nine Palms Precinct, San Bernardino County
James B Hankins, Saddle Livery, Twenty Nine Palms, Republican
Rachel Hankins, Housewife, Twenty Nine Palms, Republican

1938, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #2112
James B Hankins, 10833 Blix St, electrician, R
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 10833 Blix St, housewife, D

1942, Burbank City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #64
James B Hankins, 814 Pass Av, electrician, D
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 814 Pass Av, housewife, D

1944, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #2111

1946, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #2673

Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 4823 Satsuma Av, D

This is my dad and Rachel in 1946 in front of the Satsuma Avenue house. Daddy was discharged from the Navy on 22 Apr 1946 in California and spent some time with Jimmy and Rachel before returning home to Kentucky.

1948, Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #2673
James B Hankins, 4823 Satsuma Av, D
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 4823 Satsuma Av, D

This is one of several other photos in the family collection made outside this house so they were made sometime during this time period. This one is Jimmy (far right) and his brothers, Elvie and Dick.

1950, Burbank City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #29
James B Hankins, 3003 Riverside Dr, R
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 3003, Riverside Dr, R

1952, Burbank City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #37
Janes [sic] B Hankins, 4140 Franklin Av, R

1954, Burbank City, Los Angeles County, Precinct #37
Janes [sic] B Hankins, 4140 Franklin Av, R
Mrs. Rachel Hankins, 4140 Franklin Av, R

1954 is the last year Jimmy and Rachel appear in these records. The collection says it covers 1900–1968 but it is not all inclusive. San Diego County, where Jimmy and Rachel eventually moved, is only covered through 1944 and Los Angeles County records are missing for 1960 and 1962.

Looking for Lula Lanier

Lula was the oldest child of Joseph Smith Lanier and Nancy Jane Bennett. She appears in census records with them in 1870, 1880 and 1900 but I’m betting she didn’t actually live with them in 1900.

In 1870, Joseph, Nancy Jane and their only child (Lulie Lanier, age four months, born in January in Alabama) lived in Chambers County, Alabama.

By 1880, the family lived in Rock Mills, Randolph County, Alabama and Lula had two brothers and two sisters. She was listed as Lousiana (I think), age 10, born in Alabama. The spelling appears to be Lousiana (maybe a misspelling for Louisiana) but it could be something else.

Joseph and Nancy’s census record for 1900 includes all of their living children as opposed to all of their children living with them at that time in Monroe County, Mississippi. Their daughter Emma married in Chambers County, Alabama in 1889 and did not move with the family to Mississippi. She lived in Coweta County, Georgia in 1900 with her husband and four children. Their daughter Hettie married in Monroe County in 1898 and lived there with her husband and daughter in 1900. Yet both Emma and Hettie were listed in their parents’ household—Emma as a widow, Hettie as single.

So, even though Lula was included as a widow, age 31, born Jan 1869 in Alabama, it is entirely possible that she did not live with them in 1900.
Considering Lula’s age, it’s more likely that she married before most of the family moved to Mississippi about 1897 but there isn’t a marriage record in Chambers or Randolph County for her.

I know that Lula lived until at least the 1930s or 40s. Her sister Sallie’s granddaughter (born in 1926) remembers her as “short and plump with white hair.” She also remembers calling her Aunt Lula and Aunt Lou but doesn’t remember where she lived, what her last name was or anything about a husband or children.

Unless a marriage record is located or a descendant found, it’s unlikely I’ll ever find Lula. If you know anything about her (or anyone else in the family), please e-mail me.

Is This the Same Man?

This is Milton J. "Milt" Taylor (1872-1928).
His granddaughter sent me the picture last year.

This unidentified picture belonged to Mary Elizabeth Taylor Wagner.
Her grandfather, William Thomas Taylor, was Milt's oldest brother.

The hair is parted on the opposite side but I think this could be Milt.
(Maybe the negative was flipped in one of them?)

What do you think?
